BlacKkKlansman | Rotten Tomatoes

Feb 07, 2019

Spike Lee has always been a very hit-or-miss director for me. Even in the movies he hits, he still has things that really missed though; and even in his movies that missed, he still has things that hit. BlacKkKlansman is his first movie that I can say is genuinely great, possibly perfect. Iâ(TM)d really be stretching to find a fault with this movie. I would say if anything, some of the political undertones (or near the end of the film, outright overtones) might date the film a bit after this year and are certainly going to divide people. However, thatâ(TM)s really stretching to find a fault. And Spikeâ(TM)s never been one for subtlety, so he wanted to send a message in these divided times, and hey, message received. The movie itself, the story itself, is just so damn good. Itâ(TM)s incredibly entertaining while never shying away from the more disturbing aspects. I love how itâ(TM)s able to make fun of the Klan by showing David Duke as the most wonder-bread-covered-in-mayonnaise-aw-shucks-dorky white guy but still making it clear that he is capable of despicable acts. There are sequences in this movie that are genuinely upsetting and difficult to watch. However, there are other scenes that are laugh-out-loud funny. Itâ(TM)s a great approach, saying yeah these guys are dangerous, but letâ(TM)s not forget theyâ(TM)re jackasses we should be laughing at. Itâ(TM)s an incredible story, and told with such flair and style that itâ(TM)s immensely watchable. One of the best films of the year.
